Nominee: Hanna Savidge (hsavidge@lps.org)
Nominated by: Becky Evans (revans2@lps.org)
For Rookie of the Year
Nomination description:
Hanna has shown tremendous ability as a math teacher at the very beginning of what will no doubt be a impactful teaching career. Hanna quickly committed to working with a district math coach to increase her teaching capacity. Aiming to reach all of her students and increase the teacher:student talk ratio, Hanna analyzed her classroom instruction to find areas of growth. This year she has focused on intentionally planning questions to encourage higher-level mathematical thinking. She also adjusted her instructional moves to increase her students\' voices in the math lesson. Hanna develops the mathematical thinking abilities of the students in her classroom each and every day.

Nominee: Hanna Savidge (hsavidge@lps.org)
Nominated by: Monica Jochum (mjochum@lps.org)
For Rookie of the Year
Nomination description:
It is my pleasure to nominate Hanna Savidge for the Rookie teacher of the Year. Hanna does all she can to ensure her students have the best instruction possible. One way I see this in her math instruction is the way she has students interact through math talk. She will have a student come up and share the way they solved a problem. The rest of the class is intently listening for understanding of their method. The students then follow up with questions connected to the student\'s thinking. The students have a very natural conversation about their mathematical thinking. All the while, Hanna is listening with a keen ear and facilitating the conversation. She allows her students to lead the conversations and steps in to guide or ask follow up questions. Ms. Savidge\'s routines and procedures she has in place foster a love of mathematical and deep problem solving in a community of learners. Hanna is also wanting to improve her craft of teaching. She works with her team, building and district staff on a regular basis. Her deep planning for math includes intentional opportunities for students to engage with one another. She is not afraid to ask for help when she needs it. I am lucky to have Hanna on our staff and look forward to having her make an impact on our students\' math growth and critical thinking.

Nominee: William Morgan (wmorgan@sbps.net)
Nominated by: Shelby Aaberg (saaberg@sbps.net)
For Rookie of the Year
Nomination description:
There are great teachers in every school building. A quick way to find them is to notice the classrooms where kids choose to spend their free time. William Morgan is well on his way to becoming a phenomenal math educator. Students gravitate toward his passion, energy, and enthusiasm for teaching and for serving others. The 2020-2021 school year was fraught with challenges: COVID-19 protocols, disengaged students, remote and hybrid learning. Now imagine being a first year math teacher teaching Algebra 2 and Geometry, coaching two sports, and suddenly being named the head coach of a Varsity sport mid-year. William Morgan did just that. Mr. Morgan coached middle school football, Varsity girls soccer, and took over mid-year on a few days’ notice as our Head Coach for our Varsity Swim team. It is so obvious Mr. Morgan truly loves helping high school students reach their potential. Mr. Morgan has already impressed our department with his passion for mathematics and for helping students. He would often give up his lunch time and free periods to work with students. Mr. Morgan enjoyed working on contest problems and challenges with our Math Club team members and would often bring problems for us to work on together. Mr. Morgan demonstrates instructional leadership during our PLCs and team Algebra 2 and Geometry planning times. Mr. Morgan is very strong with technology and uses sound pedagogical practices in his classroom. Stephen, one of our highest needs students, connected with Mr. Morgan. I was deeply impressed and moved by how Mr. Morgan knew how to calmly de-escalate Stephen by engaging his interests and using humor. Day after day, I watched Mr. Morgan help this young man stay in the classroom. Our Panhandle school district hit a home run when we hired Mr. Morgan. I offer my most enthusiastic nomination for William Morgan for NATM Rookie of the Year. Thank you for your consideration. - Shelby Aaberg, 2015 Nebraska Teacher of the Year, 2013 Presidential Awardee, Mathematics Department Chair, Scottsbluff High School
